senior citizen
regains independence and builds trust
Gladys*, a senior
citizen in Grand Forks, had lived a hard life that prevented her from
easily trusting others. Because she didn’t feel comfortable
interacting with others, when she needed help living independently,
she hesitated to ask.
She also didn't
have the option of depending on family members and children for help
since they are scattered around the US, with some even living outside
of the country. Her health needs were being neglected and Gladys*
clearly needed help.
A concerned
neighbor intervened and talked to the Greater Grand Forks Senior
Citizen Association, a United Way-funded agency that provides
activities for the elderly including meal programs, health screening
and outreach counseling.
The Senior Citizens
Association now make sure Gladys* receives a hot, nutritious meal
everyday from Home Delivered Meals, and they make sure her health
needs are being met. They also check on her periodically to see if she
needs any other outreach services, allowing her to remain in her home.
Gladys* is not only
healthier, but she also has built up her trust in others thanks to the
caring individuals at the Senior Citizens Association. She isn't
afraid to call and ask for help from her new "family.”
