young mother and
son thrive with help of united way agency
At age 14, Megan*
should have been preparing for high school, but instead she found
herself preparing for motherhood. She had become pregnant and fear and
uncertainty soon followed.
When Healthy
Families, a local United Way-funded program of Lutheran Social
Services, stepped in, Megan* knew right away she couldn’t turn down
their assistance. The program that offers support to at-risk families
provided Megan* with a family support worker. The worker educated
Megan* about her son’s development and the proper discipline from his
birth through the first five years, replacing her fear with knowledge.
Megan* surpassed
all expectations and graduated from school with honors. She is now
living independently with her son while working and attending college
to become a nurse.
